Light that hides its source
LED strip lighting is recessed into the underside of every open shelf. You see the glow, never the fitting.

A Jacka family home planned around the kitchen, with the everyday mess kept out of sight.
The family came to us with a clear list: four bedrooms, a room for grandparents to stay, and a kitchen big enough for everyone to cook together on a Sunday. Because we offer design and construction in Canberra under one contract, we could work through the plan with them, drawing by drawing, until the kitchen sat at the centre of the house, with living, dining and the rear garden all opening off it.
The kitchen itself pairs smoked oak and painted timber joinery, with backlit open shelving either side of the rangehood and a butler's pantry hidden behind a full-height door, so the mess of cooking never reaches the dining table.

Shot over three visits, at dawn, midday and dusk, so the material palette reads the way the family will actually live in it.

Small decisions that only reveal themselves once you're living in the house. These are ours for this project.

The butler's pantry door is flush-finished in the same veneer as the cabinetry either side, so at a glance it isn't there at all.
The guest bedroom sits at the opposite end of the house from the main suite, with its own ensuite, so grandparents can stay for a week without anyone feeling in the way.
