The Brief

How this Whitlam home came to be.

Share your brief with us

The brief centred on one idea, one we see more and more in custom homes in Canberra: the kitchen should be the room the whole house is planned around. A full-height run of dark timber cabinetry, integrated appliances and a skylight over the island give it presence without shouting for attention.

That same discipline carried through to the family bathroom, with large-format tile that won't stain, a frameless shower sized for two children and one exhausted parent, and hardware rated well beyond what the warranty requires.

What's inside

The specification, in plain English.

Every line here is something we insisted on, not something added to fatten a quote.

Ask about this specification
  • 01Full-height dark timber cabinetry with integrated appliances
  • 02Skylight over the kitchen island for midday light without heat gain
  • 03Large-format porcelain tile through the family bathroom
  • 04Frameless glass shower sized for family use, not just display
  • 05Whisper-rated ceiling exhaust fans throughout wet areas
  • 06Matte finishes selected specifically to hide water spotting

Signature moments

The things worth
pointing out.

Small decisions that only reveal themselves once you're living in the house. These are ours for this project.

No. 01

A kitchen with no upper gap

Cabinetry was run floor to ceiling with no bulkhead gap, so there's no dust-trap shelf above the cupboards to think about.

No. 02

Light without the heat

The skylight over the island uses a diffusing cell that spreads midday sun without turning the kitchen into a greenhouse.

No. 03

Built for real mornings

The bathroom's double vanity was widened well beyond standard so two people can use it at once without an elbow war.
